The Hebrew word meaning “heavens” is composed of two separate words, א, which is short for asher אשר, and mayim מים which means “waters”; thus “Heaven” in Hebrew is literally “those waters” or “these waters”, “that water” or “this water”.

To understand the meaning of 'water' as 'heavens', one first needs to have an understanding of Semitic cosmology.
