A "Censer", "Crucible", or "Thurible"

singular, noun

In English, the words ‘incense’, ‘scent’ and ‘censer’ all share the same root, whereas the censer is the receptacle in which the incense is placed, which gives scent. This same object is also sometimes referred to as a thurifer, which comes from the Latin word thuribulo.[1]

In Judaism

The clergy use the tanura to burn the incense which is used in the services of the church. All souls undergo a reckoning, a carrying away of sin by prayer. As the smoke rises from the censer, and dissipates out into the atmosphere, our prayers are carried out with it and become part of the Universe. The censer then is a representation of the power of the Holy Spirit working within the Church, for the greater good of all of mankind.

The priests of the old temple were instructed to take “burning coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain” (Leviticus 16:12) of the temple.

During the time of the First Temple the tanura had a single handle very much like a modern garden trowel, but was slightly bigger. There were no chains, no bells, and no cover. Coals were taken from beneath animal sacrifices, using the trowel and incense was placed on top to create fragrant smoke. The priest then walked around with this spreading the smoke where it was supposed to go. There are a number of such tanuri attested to in Mideast archeology, in various religions, Zoroasterians, Jews and Egyptians all used this form.

Nazarani Tanura

The tanura pictured above is the traditional version used in the Nazarani rîte, however it should be noted that a large number of different configurations and styles exist. Thus it is important to familiarise yourself with the distinct elements of the tanura, as well as their spiritual significance and physical purpose.

To be an acceptable, the tanura must have the following twelve components.

  1. Oekemash (אוכמש) Handle
  2. Za’am (זעם) Ring
  3. Asoora (אסורא) Chain
  4. Ganugna (גנוגנא) Canopy
  5. Asoora Qatzma (אסורא קצמא) Divine Chain
  6. Pamuna (פאמונא) Bells
  7. Tsleba (צליבא) Cross
  8. Machpa (מחפא) Lid
  9. Za’ama D’Saber (זעמא דסבר) Rings of Hope
  10. Za’ama Zakutha (זעמא זכותא) Rings of Triumph
  11. Dayeetsa (דעיצא) egg
  12. Regla (רגלא) foot

Oekemash (אוכמש) Handle

Originally most tanura had a large ring at the top; but this has been replaced in many cases with a more ergonomic handles. This large ring represents the Father, while the smaller ‘ring’ to control airflow represented the Son, and the chain which hung from the small ring represented the Spirit of Holiness. It was a large ring, because the Father has no beginning and no end. It is from God the Father that all else emanates, comes into existence and has its being.

He who holds the tanura enters his fingers into the big ring and the small ring simultaneously, so that he can control the motion of the tanura and the amount of airflow over the coals. By doing this it is possible to direct the fragrant smelling smoke from the tanura wherever he chooses. This action symbolizes the work of God in the world, the divine incarnation and the entrance of man into the life of God.

The handle is the “highest” thing on the tanura, and thus represents the Throne of God. Below the handle are usually two much smaller rings. These rings give the thurifer the ability to swing the tanura in all directions, and without them the tanura would be much less mobile. These two small rings represent the Cherubim and the Seraphim, who sit at the Heavenly Throne. The handle is connected to the ganuga in order to suggest that without God the skies could not be sustained, and to symbolize that God is simultaneously both limitless and nothing, not even space and time can contain him.

Za’am (זעם) Ring

Above the ganuga is a small ring which represents the Son, the word that embodies, but remains different than the handle which symbolizes the Father or Throne of God. This small ring, like the Son of God, is the “modulating” force of the prayers / smoke and therefore of the Spirit as represented in our world. The loop at the end of this chain is designed to be held with one finger inside it, symbolizing the Spirit of Holiness, who has descended to us.

The four bells on each of the three chains represent the passing of souls up the ladders (chains) up and down from heaven. The four bells on each chain represent the four “corners” of the Earth, the four dimensions of our physical world, et cetera.

Asoora (אסורא) Chain

There is a chain which connects the za’am to the lid of the tanura.

This fourth chain without bells passes through a hole in the ganugna, and is able to be easily slid up and down in order to easily raise and lower the lid. The fact that this chain has no bells symbolize the local preaching of Jesus in Palestine before the Crucifixion. And refers to the silence and the promise that He did not come to condemn the world.

The symbol is also here, of the Spirit of Holiness descending upon man to control the burning fire of life inside the body. She descends independently of the physical world, directly to Christ, as was at His incarnation and His Baptism, which here are represented by the cross on the top of the lid.

Ganugna (גנוגנא) Canopy

Normally the word ganugna refers to the traditional canopy which covers the Altar in Nazarani churches; but can also refer to the canopies which are used to overshadow holy things when they are being transported. Ganuga are as if the wings of God overshadowing that which He wishes to protect with wisdom. Such as when the Angel Gabriel said to Mary that, “the Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35 *) The confluence of the chains coming together at the ganugna, symbolises the singleness (ichidaya) of the divine essence. It is the symbol of the “Most High”?

Asoora Qatzma (אסורא קצמא) Divine Chains

There are chains, ladders for spiritual beings to climb, to both ascend and descend, which lead from the canopy, and from the symbolic abode of God above all things, down from the canopy to the lid, the veil which covers the burning coals below. These chains symbolize God's Trinitarian presence at work in the world. The Father works in Heaven, The Son upon Earth and the Spirit of Holiness gives testimony to their work through the apostles, saints, martyrs, missionaries and people and breath of the Church. There are three chains and not two, for with only two chains the crucible would become unstable, and hot coals and burning incense would burn their way through the floor. There are three chains and not two, because the Trinity is the spiritual force which stabilizes our lives, past, present and future.

Pamuna (פאמונא) Bells

The English word for pomegranate comes from the same root, and refers to the twelve small bells attached to the chains which symbolise the preaching of the Twelve Apostles, where one of the bells has been silenced to symbolize the rebel Judas.
